Internet Dating Sites: Can You Really Find Love Online?
by Jan Sawyer
Through the ages, people have tried to discover the best way to find love. There are personal ads in the newspapers, telephone personals, going to community and church functions, Internet chat rooms, night clubs, ICQ, Instant Messenger and other endless means. There are literally thousands of ways to meet other singles.
I’m going to talk about some of the Internet dating sites that are available. They all work pretty much the same way with a few variations. I have found that one of the most interesting ways these days to meet quality singles is the Internet. It’s the best way to meet people you probably would never have met otherwise. There are so many different dating and personals sites out there that it is mind-boggling. Some are free and some are fee based (see my links for what I consider to be the best sites) but they are all interesting if you have a sense of adventure.
The basic idea of most of these dating sites is to fill out a profile specifically stating the type of person you are and what you are looking for in a mate. These profiles are very detailed and include a lot of personal information about you from your height, weight and age to what you like to do with your time. Some of the sites have a match feature where you basically run a match and the site returns people you are compatible with based on your criteria. Including a current photo or two of yourself will make you more popular as your profile is much more likely to be browsed if you have a picture, and they tell you that when you join. I found that to be true just from my experience with the sites where I had a membership.
There are sites where you only correspond through anonymous e-mail communications and there are sites where you have the ability to see who is online at the same time and you can talk in real-time. It’s up to you which type of site you choose based on how much free time you have to spend online talking. It’s fun chatting and exchanging information but it’s also fun to return home after work or whatever to emails from different people who would like to get to know you.
I met my husband a year ago on the type of site where you can chat in real-time, as I work on the Internet daily and had the time to chat with people while I also worked. He happened to live about an hour away from me and we chatted for a few months before we actually set up a meeting. It worked out for me. I found the perfect man for me on the Internet but there are also safety concerns which you will find addressed in a future article.
