Twins of Summer

Guest Author - Kris Bigalk

When it comes to summer, twins have more fun. Here are some outdoor and indoor summer activities especially suited to twins—there's something for every age here.

Teeter-totters and Swings
These playground stand-bys are even more fun for twins, because there is a built-in partner for the teeter-totter, and because they can take turns pushing each other on the swing. Of course, parental intervention may be necessary to encourage twins to actually cooperate, but unlike many singletons, twins usually already see the pros and cons to helping each other have fun.

HORSE
Most people with a basketball and a hoop know about the game of HORSE, but in case you need a refresher, check out this link: http://www.yardgames.org/games/ball/horse/instructions.htm

Hopscotch
All you need for hopscotch is some sidewalk chalk and a driveway or sidewalk. Here's a great link to a site that has a diagram for drawing the hopscotch court, along with detailed instructions for scoring. http://www.yardgames.org/games/traditional/hopscotch/instructions.htm

Thumb-wrestling
A great game for rainy days or bored kids in the car, thumb wrestling works best when there are ground rules in place (i.e., no hitting if you lose!). For detailed instructions, see this link: http://www.gameskidsplay.net/games/other_games/thumb_wrestling.htm

Tetherball
To play this game, you need a tetherball, which is a ball connected to a pole by a cord. Napoleon Dynamite batted one around in the movie. You can buy them at sporting goods stores, or find them on some playgrounds. Here are instructions on how to play this fun two-person game. http://www.gameskidsplay.net/games/ball_games/tether_b.htm

Marbles
Though their grandpa might be able to teach your twins how to play marbles, chances are you have no clue, right? This very fun, ancient game can intrigue kids for hours (just think, you could actually get something done!). Here is a great resource site on how to play the game: http://www.streetplay.com/thegames/marbles/marblerules.shtml

Jacks
In our grandmothers' day, Jacks was to girls what Marbles was to boys. These days, both games can be played by either sex. Just don't buy pink jacks! Here are the basics of the game: http://www.streetplay.com/thegames/jacks/

Skully
Originally a street game in NYC, this game is basically tiddlywinks played on a sidewalk. Here is a guide on how to draw the game board with sidewalk chalk, along with the rules. http://www.streetplay.com/skully/basics.shtml

Hand-clapping Games
You might remember "Miss Mary Mack" or "Patty Cake", but there are many other fun and complex hand-clapping games. The web has listings of the words, but there aren't many resources for the actions. You can make up your own, or check out this video: http://parents-choice.org/product.cfm?product_id=505&award=xx&from=1998%20Parents'%20Choice%20Award%20Winners%20
