Balancing Work And Home Life - Trends In The Battle

Despite an economic slowdown, companies are still struggling to keep good employees. A big part of retention is helping employees balance their personal lives with their professional responsibilities, and thatís creating some new trends to watch.

The value of time will outweigh the value of money. Time is quickly eclipsing money on the list of priorities for workers, particularly those with families. And more employers will offer time off as incentivesóbe it a reduced workweek or more paid time off for a job well done.

Traditional family roles will blur. A bleary-eyed father shopping for groceries with his young child may be telecommuting from his home. The seeming at-home mother who walks her son to the bus stop may be working the night shift in order to be home when the kids are out of school. You soon wonít be able to tell who does what in the home just by looking.

More employers will encourage integration of home and work. Companies are increasingly offering services to ease the conflicting demands placed on employees. Many will continue to offer conveniences like dry-cleaning service, on-site dental checkups and backup emergency childcare.

Dads will be more involved with their families. The days of absent fathers is quickly waning as more working dads make family a priority over work. Todayís young dads believe that a happy home life makes them better workers.
