Reading to Relax

Generally "getting a little R&R" means rest and relaxation, but it can also mean reading and relaxation. Reading an enjoyable novel in the evening or at night before to go to bed can take your mind away from the frustrations of the day.

If you are generally not a reader or not sure what you would like, visit your local library and ask the librarian for suggestions. You may be asked what your hobbies are or what you enjoy doing. I like cooking and often read novels called culinary mysterys. Yes, there really is such a thing. One of my favorite authors in this genre (I'm not sure if it is a genre) is Selma Eichler. Her PI protagonist is Desiree Shapiro, the plumpish widow of a policeman who offers you food as she interrogates you. Other authors are Diane Mott Davidson, her 'Goldy' Schultz is a caterer/amateur detective with a teenaged son who feels his mother deliberately sets out to embarrass him at every turn. There is Tamar Myers 'Magdalena Yoder', a Mennonite Pennsylvannia Dutch innkeeper who always finds herself knee deep in trouble. There is no deep thinking in any of these books just good reading and recipes.

I also love cats and enjoy what fans of author Lillian Jackson Braun calls 'Cat Who' books. Two cats help to make up a detective team consisting of two Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum and a handsome millionaire named James Qwilleran. When the series starts he's poor, his wife has divorced him and he has lost several newspaper jobs because of his heavy drinking. Koko comes into Jim's life in this first book.

You may be familiar with the name Nora Roberts. Roberts writes wonderful traditional romance novels. But she also writes under the name J.D. Roberts and pens a futuristic detective/romance series, called the 'In Death' novels. The first of the series is NAKED IN DEATH. Tough New York top cop Eve Dallas (she has no memory of her life before the age of 8) and murder suspect Roake (one name only) monied, the face of a poet and just barely on the right side of the law, are destined to be together. J.D. Robb has a huge following, including yours truly. If you enjoyed the Prime Suspect PBS television series you will love the 'In Death' series from J.D. Robb

James Patterson's Alex Cross is a detective with a family and a psychologist degree. Cross is tough without being complicated. My favorite Alex Cross books are KISS THE GIRLS and ALONG CAME A SPIDER. Both were made into movies and starred actor Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross. Others in the series that I know of are JACK AND JILL, POP GOES THE WEASEL and CAT AND MOUSE. If you enjoy an old fashioned type detective story then these books are for you.

Whatever your interests, you can find a book that's just right for you. Start reading and be taken away from the busy humdrum of every day life for an hour or so. Sometimes that's all the time you need to relax or get your spark back for the next daily go-round.
