Backstage at the Trumpet Awards

The 19th Annual Trumpet Awards took place here in Atlanta recently and the Cobb Energy Center was full of star power. The show was hosted by Nicole Ari Parker and her husband Boris Kojoe. They were joined by Niecy Nash who also served as co-host for the event.

The night was full of great performances from the likes of Eric Benet, Opera Singer Angela Brown featuring Richard Smallwood on the piano, James Ingram with poet Hank Stewart, Ledisi and Charlie Wilson. The highlight performance of the evening was from Silk, Angie Stone, Kelly Price and Kandi Burruss who gave a tribute in honor of the O’Jays. The O’Jays are responsible for so many hits so I know it had to be a hard choice to narrow down a few of their songs for that routine. They all did a fantastic job. Angie and Kelly even dressed alike stating “they told us we had to look like a group so this is what we came up with” the black dresses and black pumps looked great on them. The final group performance of the NFL Players Choir featuring Donnie McClurkin and Myron Butler was one I had seen before, they sing “Walking in Authority” every year at the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, but it still was a good one.

The Trumpet Awards honorees included: Drs. André Churchwell, Keith Churchwell & Kevin Churchwell – Medicine; The Honorable Eric H. Holder, Jr.– Legal; Alfred C. Liggins III– Media; Paula Madison– Corporate Leadership; Judge Greg Mathis– Humanitarian; The O’Jays – Lifetime Achievement; Richard Roundtree–The Arts; The Reverend Al Sharpton– Civil Rights; Chief Justice Georgina Wood– International; and Harry E. Johnson, Sr. forThe Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Project – President’s Award.

The Trumpet Foundation also provides scholarships to deserving students to help them pursue their education. The 2011 receipts for the Trumpet Foundation Scholarships are: Luther Burse III, Telvin Carter, Victoria Coto, Ferleria Hemingway, Malcom Jackson, Cedric McBride Jr., Chinyere Ukegbu, Taylor Walker, Louis White, and Kristiuna Woodford.

There were plenty of stars that came backstage so we could snap a photo. I even took one with a hero of mine, Rev. Al Sharpton. However the ones I wanted to see the most Boris, Nicole and Niecy never made it back to the press room. I did run into Boris for a minute in the hallway but he was moving too fast for me to snap anything. Oh well maybe next time.

Catch the show on TV-One on Sunday, April 24, 2011 at 8 p.m. Check out my slide show below.
