Punctuation Day and Other Unusual Holidays

Why did I write an article on September's little-known and unusual holidays? Maybe you want to add something just a bit different to your story. Have one of your characters celebrate one of these holidays. Even better, have your character become maniacal about the holiday or holidays your character chooses to celebrate.

Use your imagination with each one of them. Some of them I elaborate a little on, some of them I don't. You are a writer, so have fun researching each one of them that catches your eye.

Instead of listing these unusual holidays by date, I decided to list them by category and just tell the day it is celebrated.

Animal Holidays
September 2 - Bison-ten Yell Day
September 11 - Hug Your Hound Day
September 17 - Puppy Mill Awareness Day
September 17 - Responsible Dog Ownership Day
September 26 - Shamu the Whale Day
September 28 is Fish Tank Floorshow Night. Do you own a fish tank? All year long our fish entertain us. This is the night for us to thank our fish for their tireless endeavors at keeping us happy. We should show how appreciative we are of them and entertain them for a change. Sing to them, dance for them, read them. Do whatever will entertain your fish.

Fitness Holidays
September 8 is World Physical Fitness Day. I am partial to this holiday and the other fitness holiday because I came so close to losing my ability to walk. Enjoy the freedom you have to exercise and stay physically fit.
Septmber 29 - Women's Health & Fitness Day

Food/Beverage Holidays
September 1 is Chicken Boy's Day. Chicken Boy is a 22-foot tall fiberglass statue of a chicken with a man' head. He was the mascot for the now defunct Chicken Boy fried chicken restaurant. He now endorses products and makes guest appearance.
September 5 - Oatmeal Day
September 7 - Salami Day
September 13 - International Chocolate Day
September 17 - International Eat An Apple Day
September 22 is National White Chocolate Day. Chocolate is so awesome that not only is there a national day for it, there is also an international day to celebrate its goodness.
September 29 is National Coffee Day. Coffee, besides being a common beverage first thing in the morning, also goes great with your chocolate.

People/Clothing Holidays
September 1 is Emma M. Nutt Day. Emma C. Nutt was the first woman telephone operator in America.
September 2 is National Lazy Mom Day. How would a mom celebrate this most awesome day? She could sleep in, lounge around all day in her pajamas, have her children wait on her and do the housework, and just read or watch television all day long. She could have a thoroughly lazy day with no reason to feel guilty for it.
September 7 - Grandma Moses Day
September 9 is Wonderful Weirdos Day, This is a special day to be your typically weird self.
September 15 is Felt Hat Day. This is the day to pull your felt hat out of the closet, wear it, and show it off to all your friends.

September 1 is National No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day. This is the day to celebrate the uniqueness of words in the English language that do not rhyme with any other words.
September 8 – International Literacy Day
