Confusing Words from Afghan to Allusion


Would you crochet an afghan or an Afghan? Is a narrow backstreet an allay, an alley, or an ally? Would you be already or all ready to go somewhere? Will the magician perform an allusion, an elusion, or an illusion?

afghan, Afghan
An afghan is a soft blanket or shawl, usually one that has been knitted or crocheted.
For a wedding gift, Sonya received an afghan that had been crocheted by her great-great-great-grandmother.
An Afghan is someone who is from the country of Afghanistan or the language spoken there.
The Afghan language proved to be extremely hard to learn.

Africans, Afrikaans, Afrikans
Africans are natives or inhabitants of Africa.
The Africans made their home next to the river.
Afrikaans is a South African language.
Jeannie had to learn her lines in Afrikaans for the play.
Afrikans are the South Africans who speak Afrikaans.
Jeannie had two Afrikans teach her how to speak Afrikaans.

after noon, afternoon
After noon is after midday or twelve o'clock noon.
The going away party will take place some time after noon in the park.
Afternoon is the period of time between noon and sunset.
The going away party will take during the afternoon in the park.

agape, Agape
When a person stands agape, he or she is standing there with mouth wide open, as in wonder, surprise, or eagerness.
Mouth agape, the terrific news caused Amber to run and wrap her arms around Jerry as she jumped up on him.
Agape is perfect, undying and unselfish love.
Agape describes the love that Christ has for mankind.

albumen, albumin
Albumen is the white of an egg. Albumin is also the white of an egg, but when spelled this way, it can also be any of the water-soluble proteins found in many vegetable tissues and fluids.
The albumen was not completely cooked.
Albumin is a biochemistry term.

alimentary, elementary
If a food is described as alimentary, then it is nutritious.
Maria made a New Year's resolution to always prepare alimentary meals for her family.
If something is described as elementary, then it is simple.
The solution to the mystery of the disappearing mittens is so elementary.

all-around, all around
I realize that these words appear to be exactly the same, but they are not. The hyphen changes the meaning. All-around means talented in many areas.
Todd, an all-around musician, can play just about any instrument he picks up.
All around is two words and it means surrounding.
The dog chased her all around the block.

allay, alley, ally
Allay means to calm, to quiet, to settle
What was discovered today should allay your fears.
An alley is a narrow back street or a passageway.
The bank robber ran down the dark alley.
Ally as a verb means to unite, as a noun an ally is a friend.
Britain was an ally of the United States during World War II.

allocation, allocution, elocution
Allocation is the act of something being portioned out for a specific reason.
The allocation of the money raised by the bake sale will be for new computers and laptops.
An allocution is a formal address or formal speech.
The reigning king's allocution was watched by millions.
Elocution is a person's manner or style of speaking or reading in public.
Her elocution during the play tryouts was flawless.

all ready, already
When something is all ready, it is prepared or ready to go.
Megan is all ready to go to the dance.
Already means previously.
Megan already has told us that she is all ready to leave.

all together, altogether
All together means at the same time or as a group.
The kittens were all together in a heap sleeping.
Altogether means with everything considered. It means entirely, wholly, or completely.
Your idea is altogether crazy and insane.

all told, all tolled
When something is all told, everything and everyone has been taken into account.
All told, there were more than 500 people attending the party.
When something has been all tolled, all of the figures or events have been added up.
When the donations had been all tolled, we found that we had made over $5,000.

allude, elude
Allude means to refer to or to hint at.
In her speech, she will allude to the awards to be presented.
Elude means to escape.
The mass murderer seems to have a gift for be able to elude capture by the authorities.

allusion, elusion, illusion
An allusion is a casual reference.
She only made an allusion to the deep, dark secrets that were held by the inhabitants of the small, sleepy town.
Elusion is evasion by quickness or cunning.
The sly old fox's gift of elusion is what enabled him to have such a long life.
An illusion is a false sense of reality.
The magician will perform a spectacular illusion.
