Black Rock Road Interview

Black Rock Road Interview
Although they were missing their drummer Gary Creelman and guitar/bassist Alex Burris during their performance at Keggers Alehouse on January 5, 2012, vocalist/guitarist/bassist Ben Edwards and vocalist/guitarist/bassist Dave Wright put on a rocking show themselves. With their modern rock sound that contains a solid mix of classic rock, blues and even hints of country, Black Rock Road is always a hit with music fans of multiple genres. Emerging Music’s editor Danielle Crowe was able to talk to the musicians after the show to ask them a few questions.

EM – What do you like most about your music profession?
BRR – Being able to do it for a living; being able to play in front of a live audience.

EM – What do you like least?
BRR – Unresponsive crowds. We prefer more interactive crowds when we’re playing shows.

EM – How long have you been playing music?
Ben Edwards/Dave Wright – 15 years

EM – Did your family, spouse, friends, etc. have a positive reaction to your music path?
BRR – Our family has always been very supportive of our musical decisions.

EM – Who are your music inspirations?
Ben Edwards – All music. I tend to take a bit from everything I hear.
Dave Wright - Anything from within Nova Scotia, like Matt Mayes and The Trews. East Coast bands have a big influence on me.

EM – How has your music changed since you first began playing?
Ben Edwards – I’m more in-tune with it; more serious and focused. We’ve moved further from cover songs and have become better songwriters.

EM – What influenced you to begin playing music?
BRR – Girls (Laughs). It was there all along after learning our first songs.

EM – How do you balance your music with your other obligations (career, family)?
BRR – There’s always time for music. We love it so we just fit it in.

EM – How do you handle mistakes during performances?
BRR – Make weird faces, laugh and just keep playing. Generally the audience doesn’t notice so as long as you don’t draw attention you can flow through it.

EM – What advice do you give beginning musicians?
BRR – Just keep going and don’t get frustrated. It can be testing and as long as you just keep doing it you can succeed.
