Confusing Words from Anecdote to Ark


If bitten by a snake, do you need an anecdote or an antidote? Do math students learn how to measure an angel or an angle? Would you be taken on a picnic by your aunt or your ant?

anecdote, antidote
An anecdote is a story.
Jerry had an anecdote to share about every situation in his life.
An antidote is a remedy.
It isn't wise to travel through the jungle unless you have an antidote for the bite of the poisonous snakes that reside there.

angel, angle
An angel is a celestial attendant of God. An angel is also a messenger for God.
An angel revealed to Mary that she was pregnant with the Son of God.
An angle is a projecting corner or a viewpoint.
Margie is learning how to measure an angle in geometry class.

ant, aunt
An ant is an insect that delights in ruining picnics.
One single, very large ant could be seen in the distance.
An aunt is the sister of one of your parents.
I spent a great amount of time with my aunt when I was growing up.

ante, anti, auntie
The prefix ante, as in antedated, means before.
Antebellum means happening or existing before the Civil War.
The prefix anti means against.
The anti-abortion movement had some very influential ladies of the community as members..

any body, anybody
Any body means any person. In case the person happens to be dead, it could also mean any corpse.
Any body in the morgue is liable to be examined by the new coroner.
Anybody means anyone.
Is anybody home?

any more, anymore
Any more is simply another way of saying any.
Is there any more bread?
Anymore means any longer or now.
Anymore, I exercise just about every day.

any one, anyone
Any one means any single person or thing.
Is any one home?
Anyone means any person at all.
Anyone is welcome to come to the picnic.

any way or anyway
Any way means by any method.
Just get the work done any way you can.
Anyway means in any case or regardless.
No matter what your response, I'm going to the party anyway.

appose, oppose
Appose is a verb that means to place side by side.
Sandi planned to appose her knick-knacks on the mantel.
Oppose means to act against or obstruct.
The citizens who oppose the tearing down of the historical building are meeting at 5:00 downtown.

appraise, apprise
Appraise means to estimate or to judge.
I will let you know my decision after I appraise the situation.
Apprise means to inform.
I will apprise you of what is going on.

appropriation, expropriation
An appropriation is anything, especially money, that has been set aside for a special purpose.
The large appropriation for the new medical center will be awarded at the banquet this evening.
Expropriation means a taking, especially by a government.
The expropration of the houses by the rebel government caused the citizens to not like them.

arc, ark
Arc is a geometrical term that means any unbroken part of the circumference of a circle or other curved line.
Teddy is learning how to measure an arc in his geometry class.
An ark is a boat.
God instructed Noah to build an ark.
