Highway On My Plate - Book Review

Highway On My Plate - Book Review
After four years of tasting the best and worst of Indian roadside restaurants for the famous television series ‘Highway on my plate’ on NDTV Good Times, Rocky Singh and Mayur Sharma decided to make a book of their findings as a one of a kind resource for everyone contemplating on Indian road travel.

The book has an alphabetic listing of Indian States for road travelers to choose from. Each state entry has a map with the possible eat outs highlighted. Following this are a series of reviews of each of these dhabas (small Indian eat outs), complete with specialties, address, contact number, rating on taste, ambience, service and value for money. Rocky and Mayur also give their own verdict on the place and the best food options available.

‘Something on the side’ is an additional tit bit on the place which will make road traveler(s) make the most of their time at the restaurant.

Rocky and Mayur have been very balanced in their judgment and give every place ‘it’s due’. They list out vegetarian and non vegetarian options in each menu and their description will make any hungry traveler long to rush into the nearest dhaba listed here.

Not every restaurant gets Rocky and Mayur’s certification of excellence, but those that do are well worth a visit. The duo also give enough warning on the kind of food served and in many cases warn the hungry traveler from walking into a sub standard eat out. Based on their own experiences, Rocky and Mayur offer alternatives as well.

The book is full of Indian food varieties, traditional and regional. At times it may seem to be hard to imagine what the food Rocky and Mayur talk about could be. But anyone who reads and uses the book will soon learn to trust the judgment of these men on their food wisdom.

There are also suggestions in Highway on my plate on what can be parceled home for longer enjoyment and sharing.

If all this is not enough, the book has a picture section and the mouth watering collection here will give travelers a look of what to expect in Indian dhabas.

Highway on my plate is a perfect guide on Indian roadside eating for tourists, families and individuals. Those wise enough to keep a copy of this useful guide on all Indian road travels will end up having a well fed trip.

I bought a copy of Highway on My Plate and this review is based on my experience with this book.
