Unique Names Day & Other Special Holidays

Do you prefer to write mysteries or romances, thrillers or fantasies, science fiction or historical fiction? Whatever genre you prefer to write in, I'm sure you can find a way to include one of these special holidays that occur in March in your story. It will add a bit of something different to your story.

Are you going to find out if you were named after a distant relative on Namesake Day? Are you going to learn how to snowshoe on U.S. Snowshoeing Day? Are you going to feast on frozen food on National Frozen Food Day?

Namesake Day - This is the day to research your own name and find out just where it came from and why it was given to you. Were you named after one of your parents? Perhaps you were named after one of your grandparents or an even more distant relative? What is the reason you were given your name? Did the person they name you after do something great? Or is it a name that your parents just liked really well?

Whatever reason you were given your name, why not write a story around it? If you were named after a person who did something great, even if that something was great only in the eyes of your parents, you can write a story about it. If your parents just really liked the name they blessed you with, then you can make up a story around the reason they were so fond of it.

Sofia Kovalevskaya Math Day - This lady, Sofia Kovalevskaya, was the first prominent female mathematician. On this day that honors her many contributions to the fields of applied and computational mathematics, girls are encouraged to explore mathematical fields.

Mathematics scare me, so I'm not going to explore this field any more than necessary. But, if you are interested at all in the field of mathematics, you could write an historical fiction story about all of her contributions to this important subject.

Unique Names Day - Did your parents bless you with a unique name? Did they strive to make you stand apart from everyone else by giving you a name they were sure no one else would have? Maybe you are named after a holiday and have a name such as Christmas or Easter. Maybe you are named after a season of the year and your name is Summer or Spring. Maybe your parents like flower names and gave you a name like Tulip or Daffodil.

Possibly some of your friends have really unique names. Do you know anyone named America? Maybe you know someone named Skye.

Whether you are the one with a unique name or you know someone with a unique name, today is the day to celebrate and be proud of it.

Why not give one or more of your characters really unique names. It may make them more memorable.

U.S. Snowshoe Day - Snowshoeing is a winter sport where specially designed shoes that keep one's feet on top of the snow are worn. This is the day to celebrate this sport that offers any person a great cardiovascular workout. If you don't know how to snowshoe, this would be the day to learn.

Why not write a story where the sport of snowshoeing is part of the main storyline? Even though it would be a fiction story, you could include a lot of the history of the sport in it. A mystery/thriller that takes place during a blizzard would be awesome.

Dentist's Day - This day was probably created by a dentist, dental group, or dental association to encourage dental visits. You could send your dentist a thank you card for helping you take care of your teeth. You could start using dental floss. You could make an appointment to go see your dentist.

Or you could write a story in which the main character is a dentist. Of course, you may have to visit your dentist to do some research.

National Frozen Food Day - Can you imagine what life would be like without your freezer? Can you imagine not having the selection of frozen foods at the grocery store to select from? Can you imagine life without frozen food? What was the name of the genius who came up with the process for freezing food? Chances are you will recognize the name. It was Clarence Birdseye. The very first frozen foods hit the shelves in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1930. Thank you, Mr. Birdseye.

How can you celebrate this day? You need to eat some frozen food, of course. Than you can write an historical fiction story about Clarence Birdseye and how he developed this process. Or you can write a story in which frozen food is a big part of the storyline.
