Land Line Telephone Day & Other Odd Holidays
Do you prefer to write mysteries or romances, thrillers or fantasies, science fiction or historical fiction? Whatever genre you prefer to write in, I'm sure you can find a way to include one of these odd holidays that occur in March in your story. It will add a bit of something different to your story.
What feats of awesomeness are you going to do on International Day of Awesomeness? Are you going to have a land line phone installed on Land Line Telephone Day? Are you going to give up the use of your credit cards on U.S. Paper Money Day?
International Day of Awesomeness - This is a holiday on which you need to have fun, fun, and more fun. Don't take this day too seriously, but you need to go out by yourself or with a bunch of your friends and do some awesome things. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but this day is also the birthday of Chuck Norris.
What kind of awesome feats do you plan on doing today? What would you consider awesome? Would it be awesome if you managed to get an entire book read in one day? Or maybe you have something a bit more physical in mind. How about jogging alongside a car as it is going down the road and staying abreast of it? How awesome would that be? Or perhaps your idea of awesomeness is helping others out. If so, why not use this day to help out your friends, neighbors, or just anyone who needs a helping hand?
This holiday was the idea of Kevin Lawver and was not meant to be taken seriously. On this day, why not create a character who is determined to prove just how awesome he thinks he is.
International Fanny Pack Day - What is a fanny pack? It is a pouch with a zipper that has an adjustable strap and is worn around the waist like a belt. They are also known as belted bags, hip bags, pouches, and hands-free bags. Whatever you want to call it, this is the day to celebrate these bags that hit their highlight of popularity in the 1980s.
A fanny pack could be useful for a runner to carry things in. Or they could be handy for a thief to stash stolen goods in.
Why not create a character who steals things and hides them in a fanny pack? Maybe it could be a maid who liked to pick up trinkets and valuables that her mistress left lying around.
Land Line Telephone Day - I could not find any information on this holiday except its date. My guess would be that it celebrates the invention of the land line telephone. Today land line phones are not nearly as popular as cell phones. I don't even have a land line phone, just a cell phone.
Why not write a story about a time and place when land line phones have completely gone out of style? A lot of people now choose not to bother with land line phones any more since cell phones are so much more convenient. But then a monster solar storms occurs and the cell phones are rendered useless. What happens? Do people decide to once again use land line phones?
Mario Day - The first thing I though of when I saw Mario Day was the Mario typing tutor. I will be forever grateful to it for improving my typing skills. Mario Day is celebrated on March 10. Why? Well, look at the way it is written – MARIO. Anyone could mistake that for March 10. Does it celebrate the Nintendo character Mario? Or is it a celebration for anyone named Mario?
Why do you believe this day was created? Write a story and give a reason, no matter how wild and crazy or unbelievable it is, and make it plausible.
U.S. Paper Money Day - This is another holiday that I couldn't find any information on besides the fact that it exists, so I'm guessing that this is a day to celebrate legal tender that can be held in your hand and spent without incurring any future bills. In this day of credit and bank cards, cash just isn't seen much any more.
This would be a good day to write an historical fiction story that has something or anything to do with the printing of paper money. Or you could a story about a land where paper money had been outlawed. What do they use for cash?
