Snowman Burning Day & Other Unique Holidays

Do you prefer to write mysteries or romances, thrillers or fantasies, science fiction or historical fiction? Whatever genre you prefer to write in, I'm sure you can find a way to include one of the unique holidays that occur in March in your story. It will add a bit of something different to your story.

Do you have a fiancee to kiss on Kiss Your Fiancee Day? Does everyone in your family have a jump rope to jump on National Jump Out! Day? How many snowmen will you burn on Snowman Burning Day?

Kiss Your Fiancee Day - If you happen to have a fiancee, I hope that you don't need a special reason to kiss him or her. Anyway, this day is set aside to forget all the stress of planning your wedding, and just enjoy the companionship of your significant other with a kiss.

This would be a good day to use in a romance novel of any kind, especially a romantic thriller. One of the engaged couple would know about this special holiday, while the other one wouldn't. The one who does know about it decides to have a surprise party for his or her fiancee and present him or her with a very special gift.

National Jump Out! Day - This day is to encourage everyone to grab a jump rope and exercise. Starting an exercise routine with a jump rope would be a fantastic way to start spring. Too many people are not active enough, and increasing your physical activity will only make you healthier.

I'm not sure how this holiday started, so why don't you come up with a reason for its beginning and write a story about it?

Proposal Day - According to the dictionary, a proposal is a recommendation or suggestion. This day isn't just about marriage proposals, it's about proposals of any kind. But it could so easily be combined with Kiss Your Fiancee Day.

This could be a day to come up with a business proposal or a proposal for a new business. Maybe your character could be a boy who delivers newspapers. He has a proposal for several of his friends concerning his paper route and the delivery of his newspapers. Or you could stick with the marriage proposal and combine this day with Kiss Your Fiancee Day.

Snowman Burning Day - What a perfect thing to do on the first day of spring! If you don't have snow to build a proper snowman it's not a problem Do what the students at Lake Superior State University do each year – build a massive snowman out of paper, then burn it. This yearly ritual was first done in 1971.

Before snowman burning started in Michigan in '71, it was being done in other places throughout the world. Germany has a Rose Sunday Festival. On this day, provided the children of the town have been good all year long, the mayor of each town burns a snowman made out of straw as a welcome to spring. The Swiss also guide in spring by burning a snowman.

It is said that the rising smoke will keep blizzards away and usher in spring. Why is this believed? Write a story that demonstrates how the smoke from a burning snowman keeps a ferocious blizzard away from a town.
