Terri's Day & Other Unusual HolidaysDo you prefer to write mysteries or romances, thrillers or fantasies, science fiction or historical fiction? Whatever genre you prefer to write, I'm sure you can find a way to include one of the unusual holidays that occur in March in your story. It will add a bit of something different to your story. Are you going to buy a Bunsen burner on Bunsen Burner Day? On National “She's Funny That Way” Day, are you going to watch the comedy of Lucille Ball and Carol Burnette? How many clams are you going to eat on National Clam on the Half Shell Day? Bunsen Burner Day - Those in a chemistry class know what a Bunsen burner is – a type of gas burner commonly used in chemical laboratories. German chemist Robert Wilhelm Eberhard von Bunsen is the name of the man who created it, although some say he just improved on what was already created. He was born on March 31, 1811, so today is set aside to honor his birth. You could write an historical fiction story about how Mr. Bunsen created this gas burner. Or you could write a story about a group of students learning how to use a Bunsen burner. Or you could write a mystery story where a Bunsen burner is at the center of the crime. The possibilities are endless. National “She's Funny That Way” Day - Do you know any women who unintentionally make you laugh? Do they just have a way of doing certain things that you find funny? Could the funny lady you know make a career out of being funny? Lucille Ball and Carol Burnette had very successful careers as comedians. This holiday honors the humorous nature of women. You could write a fictional story about a famous funny lady or one that is famous only in your life. Terri's Day - This holiday is a bit more serious. Terri's Day is in memory of Terri Schiavo, a young woman who died by dehydration after a judge ordered that her feeding tube be removed. It took her thirteen horribly long days to die. I've sat and read about the whole case surrounding her death once again to write about this day. I believe that this young lady could have had a long and productive life had she been allowed to go through rehabilitation. And I believe her court-ordered death was horribly wrong. In honor of Terri Schiavo, research everything that went on during the fight to save her life. Create a character who was part of this fight, and write a story about the things this character learned and experienced. National Clam on the Half Shell Day - The origins of this holiday are unknown, but this is a day to eat clams. You could even be brave and enjoy clams the way that squid and sharks do, eat it raw. If you have never liked clams before, maybe today you can find a way you like to eat them. Use your anthropomorphic skills today and write a story where the main characters are all clams.
