Go For Broke Day & Other Special HolidaysThe month of April is full of crazy and unique holidays. Here are a few more of them for you to consider including in your writing. What risky endeavor will you undertake on Go For Broke Day? Will you travel to Chicago to visit Uno on National Deep Dish Pizza Day? How will you make your job fun on National Fun at Work Day? Go for Broke Day - Do you like to take chances? Or are you one who always does things the 'safe' way? No matter which type of person you are, this is your day to take a chance, to go out on a limb with some thing that is risky. It could be a financial thing, it could be a relationship thing, it could be a writing thing, or it could have to do with any other area of your life. Today you just need to let loose and take a risk. The origins of this day is a mystery, but as a writer, you could solve that mystery by coming up a reason for its creation. Write a story and come up with a plausible reason for the creation of this day. If your reason isn't so believable, see if you can make it so. National Deep Dish Pizza Day - Uno, the restaurant that made deep-dish pizza famous, was opened in Chicago in 1943. It's owner, Thomas Sewell, decided that he needed to change the way people thought about pizza. At this time, pizza was thought of only as a snack food, not as an entire meal. Using authentic Italian recipes, he added lots of quality meats, lots of fresh vegetables, flavorful spices, and topped it all with mounds of cheese. His plan apparently worked. Many people now enjoy pizza as a meal. What if you were around when Mr. Sewell decided to make pizza famous? Would you have helped him? Is there another food that you think needs a better reputation? Write a story abut how you would accomplish this. Or create a character who helped Mr. Sewell change the way that people thought about pizza. National Fun at Work Day - I found several conflicting dates on this holiday, but why can't you have fun at work every day? You may love your job, or you may hate your job. Regardless of how you feel about it, is there any way you can make it more fun? It could be something as simple as cleaning off your desk so that it is easier to work at. Or you may need to do something a bit more drastic. Throw a pizza party once a week during lunch. I'm sure you can think of other ways, too. Whatever you decide, just don't make your workplace unpleasant for anyone else who works with you. Why was this holiday created? My guess would be that it was created by someone who had a boring job and was trying to find a way to spice it up. Create a character who came up with this holiday, and give him a really great reason for inventing this day.
