Homonyms from Discussed to Effect


Do you make bread with dough or do you make bread with doe? When you accidentally fall asleep, do you doze or do you does? When you complete a task, are you done with the job or are you dun with the job? Have fun learning about homonyms from discussed to effect.

discussed, disgust
When something has been discussed, it has been talked about, debated, considered, and commented on.
Beatrice's parents discussed whether or not Beatrice would be allowed to accompany the rest of her class on a trip to China.
When you show disgust, you show loathing or a strong distaste for something.
Her face wrinkled up in disgust when she witnessed the baby spiders crawling out of the huge spider she had just killed.

doe, dough
A doe is a female deer.
A does and her babies could be seen from the side window of the car.
Dough is slang for money. It is also a mixture of flour, water, and other ingredients used to make bread, rolls, etc.
The warm smell of the rising pizza dough filled the kitchen.

doc, dock
Doc is short for doctor. It is a casual term of address for a man.
When are going to so see the doc?
A dock is a pier, wharf, or marina. It is also a place where trucks are loaded or unloaded.
When the pleasure yacht left the dock, it almost collided with another boat.

does, doze
Does means more than one female deer.
There are a group of does in the clearing.
To doze is to snooze or take a nap.
The writer had a tendency to doze after staring for hours at the computer.

done, dun
When a job has been done, it has been completed.
Are you done mowing the grass?
A dun is a demand for payment or a creditor.
The unemployed young lady tried to ignore the growing list of duns.

draft, draught
One meaning of draft is the preliminary form of any writing that is subject to revision.
It took her three months to write the rough draft of her novel.
A draught is a current of air, especially in an enclosed space.
The draught they felt alerted them that there must be an exit close by.

dual, duel
Dual means consisting of two people, items, parts, etc.
The new dual controls on the boat confused the young sailor.
A duel is a fight or combat between two people.
The duel is scheduled to take place very early in the morning.

e'er, air
E'er is a contraction for ever.
Did you e'er turn out the light?
Air is what we breathe to stay alive.
People must breathe air, not water.

earn, urn
When you earn something, you have worked for it and you deserve it.
Through her studying, she is trying to earn an A in her history class.
An urn is a large or decorative vase.
The expensive urn was broken when hit with a ball.

effect, affect
An effect is the result of an action.
Studying will have an effect on your test scores.
Affect means to influence.
Hanging around with the wrong kind of people will affect your behavior.
