Kindergarten Day & Other Unusual Holidays

There are an abundance of unusual holidays in April. Whether you prefer to write mysteries or romance, thrillers or fantasies, science fiction or historical fiction, I'm sure you can find one of them that catches your eye and causes storylines to start running through your mind.

Will you visit a kindergarten class on Kingergarten Day? What music artist will you see on Record Store Day? On Bulldogs are Beautiful Day, will you tell your bulldog just how beautiful he is?

Kindergarten Day - This day is celebrated in honor of Friedrich Froebe, who was born on April 21, 1782. The very first kindergarten was started by him in Germany in 1837.

The first day of kindergarten is a joyous, yet anxious time for both the mother and the child. If you went to kindergarten (I did not), perhaps you remember your first day. Or maybe you teach kindergarten. Perhaps you have witnessed just how nervous students can be on their first day.

In celebration of this day, you could write an historical fiction story about the very first kindergarten. Or you could write a fictional story about your or your child's first day in class. If you have taught kindergarten, you could write it from a teacher's point of view.

Record Store Day - The third Saturday of April each year celebrates the art of music. On this day, there are many artists who make special appearances, hold special performances, and meet with their fans.

Create a character who is a huge fan of a very popular group. But this group never meets with the public under any circumstances. There have been too many acts of violence taken against them, so they always stay heavily guarded. Katie's one desire is to meet the members of this band and sing with them while they perform. She writes to them and they grant her wish. What did she say to them? Why did they decide to give her what she wanted?

Bulldogs are Beautiful Day - Many people think that bulldogs are ugly, but their owners do not feel the same way. This day celebrates the beauty of these dogs whose appearance is usually thought to be not se pleasing to the eye.

Why not write a story from the perspective of a bulldog? Candy is a bulldog pup. She is teased endlessly because of her looks, and just doesn't understand why everyone tells her how ugly she is. How does Candy learn that true beauty comes from our actions rather than our looks?
