How to Understand and Nurture an Indigo Child
Is your child an Indigo Child? Does he or she fit at least five of these characteristics?

* They come into the world with a feeling of royalty (and often act like it)

* They have a feeling of "deserving to be here," and are surprised when others don't share that.

* Self-worth is not a big issue. They often tell the parents "who they are."
They have difficulty with absolute authority (authority without explanation or choice).
* They simply will not do certain things; for example, waiting in line is difficult for them.

* They get frustrated with systems that are ritually oriented and don't require creative thought.

* They often see better ways of doing things, both at home and in school, which makes them seem like "system busters" (nonconforming to any system).

* They seem antisocial unless they are with their own kind. If there are no others of like consciousness around them, they often turn inward, feeling like no other human understands them. School is often extremely difficult for them socially.

* They will not respond to "guilt" discipline ("Wait till your father gets home and finds out what you did").

* They are not shy in letting you know what they need.

If some of these characteristics describe your child then he or she may be an Indigo.

The Indigo Children have been arriving on our planet for the last 30 or so years. Many of them have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. Millions of American children are taking Ritalin or other drugs to attempt to control the behaviors associated with these conditions. The title Indigo is a metaphysical term used in the book The Indigo Children by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober. The term Indigo, related to these children was coined by Nancy Ann Tappe, who wrote the book Understanding Your Life Through Color. She intuitively saw the aura of some of the children coming to the planet changing to a dark blue color. The book The Indigo Children allows people to see that there are millions of parents and children facing decisions concerning the care, schooling, feeding and behavioral problems related to these special and gifted children.

The Indigos come into this world with the desire to change the systems. They are the system busters, and questioners of the old traditional values and ideas. They are here to tear down old worn out systems.

The Crystal Children, on the other hand, are loving, giving, healing and compassionate in nature. They are here to put restructure the havoc the Indigos leave behind.

Whether we are looking at this issue from a metaphysical or scientific viewpoint, I think we can all agree that millions of children on amphetamines is an issue that needs to be addressed.

It seems to me on a personal note, that society as a whole, has been so busy trying to change these children, that we have not stopped to really look at the conditions that led to these behaviors, or the systems that must be changed in order to allow them to grow into happy and productive adults.

My generation, the baby boomer, born in the 50’s generation, was a my, me, mine, generation in general. We saw huge changes come about from the radical hippies of the 60’s, the transitional 70’s, to the “Gee whiz, now I am the authority I was fighting against during the 80’s. We became the parents. Our generation became the divorce, finding myself, change the systems and politically correct crowd. Our children were part of this evolution. Many of them have a four parental or more unit system, due to divorce and remarriage. We changed the systems alright, but with that change, we gave up the hope of ever again having the Leave it to Beaver pattern of the well disciplined, do it because I said so, child. We encouraged them to speak their minds and think independently. They were put out into the world a lot sooner due to both parents working and the need to be in a daycare or early schooling system. They have been exposed to the mind conditioning, thought patterning influence of television, video games, and the media in general, from the music they listen to, to the clothes they wear. We are living in a fast paced, fast food, quick but temporary relief world. The days of sitting by the fireplace with grandparents, parents and children telling stories, or listening to the radio are long past.

This is evolution of the species, and with that evolution comes change. Our ideas and values as a society HAVE changed, and we are seeing them reflected in our children.

Pesticides, estrogen supplements that feed the cattle and are laced into the vegetables we eat, food additives, and a fat based, fast food American diet are all contributing factors to the issues we are facing, and not only our country, but worldwide also.

So, we have these new children. They do not respond to the old systems. They exhibit problem behavior in our homes, in our schools, and in the community. What to do?

Ahhhhh, yes there are solutions. The primary factor is to change the way we are looking at them. To learn to see what they are seeing and feel what they are feeling. There are books like The Indigo Children and organizations like Metagifted Org. that are the forerunners to help and relieve the stress and frustration that exists in communication between parents and children. There are schools like the Waldorf and Montessori that are showing us how to teach these wonderful children. There are herbal and other alternatives to Ritalin being tested. There is even a correlation between vision and ADHD and special prism glasses that is being tried with good results.
