Homonyms from Feted to Furr


Would you file the papers, or would you phial them? Do you use a filter or a philter in your fish tank? You lost a very important paper. Do you need to find it, or do you need to fined it? There are several trees growing in the forest. Are they fir trees, fur trees, or furr trees? Learn about these homonyms and others from feted to furr in this article.

feted, fetid
Feted means celebrated.
The feted couple shied away from the photographers.
Fetid means smelly or stinky.
The fetid Rafflesia flower can grow up to three feet in diameter.

few, phew
Few means not many.
Very few people attended the company party.
Phew is an expression of relief, disgust, surprise, exhaustion, etc.
”Phew! It sure is hot out today!” the runner exclaimed.

file, phial
A file is a folder for holding papers. File can also be used as a verb, and means to arrange papers or records in order so they can be stored or easily referenced.

A phial is a small glass bottle that is usually used to store medication.

fills, fils
When you fill something up, you place as much in it as it can hold. Fills is the plural of fill.
She forgets about the water bottles every time she fills them, and they overflow.
Fils is a coin monetary unit in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, and Yemen.
Maggie kept some fils as souvenirs of her visit to Yemen.

filter, philter
A filter is something through which liquid or gas is passed through to remove particles and impurities. A filter is also used in a fish tank to keep the water clean.
The filter in the aquarium needs to be changed regularly.
A philter is a poison, charm, or drug that is supposed to make one person fall in love, usually with a specific other person.
Madeleine, desperate for his love, hid a philter in his evening cup of coffee.

find, fined
Find means to locate or recover.
Do you want me to help you find your wallet?
If you are fined, you have to pay a portion of money for breaking some law.
Kevin was fined for parking in a no parking zone.

finish, Finnish
When you finish a project, you complete it.
Darlene tries to have her homework each evening before dinner is ready.
If a person is Finnish, then the person is from Finland.
Jussi Salonoja, a Finnish man, was fined $217,000 for speeding through the center of the capital.

fir, fur, furr
A fir is an evergreen tree.
There are three fir trees in my yard.
Fur is the soft, thick, hairy coat on the skin of a mammal.
The fur of animals will grow thicker during the winter months to keep them warm.
Furr means to separate with strips of wood.
Joey plans to furr out the wall with pine.
