Homonyms from Fisher to Flows

Will a flea or a flee be attracted to your dog? Does the farmer have flocks of sheep, or does he have phlox of sheep? Enjoy learning about these homonyms and more in this article.

fisher, fissure
A fisher is one who fishes.
Matthew worked as a fisher of information for the detective.
A fissure is a crack.
The earthquake opened up a huge fissure that swallowed the entire apartment complex.

flair, flare
Flair is a special ability for doing something well.
Linda's flair for drawing assured her the job of illustrator for the author's novel.
A flare is a sudden, brief burst of flame or light, or a sudden burst of intense emotion. A flare is also a device that produces a bright flame to be used as a signal or marker.
The lost hikers shot the flare into the dark sky.

flea, flee
A flea is an annoying, parasitic little insect that lives on many types of animals and will also bite humans.
The little flea sat in the grass and waited on her next, unsuspecting victim to wander by.
When you flee from something, you run away from it.
The family was trying to flee the approaching tornado.

flecks, flex
Flecks are a bunch of tiny little specks.
After painting the cabinet, the young man discovered flecks of paint all over his clothing.
Flex means to bend.
We need to find a tube that will flex.

flew, flue, flu
Flew is the past tense of fly, which means to soar through the air.
The pileated woodpecker flew over my head.
A flue is a chimney pipe.
They hired the chimney sweep to clean the flue.
The flu is a sickness that many people come down with during the winter.
Margaret came down with the flu and had to miss school for two weeks.

floe, flow
A floe is a sheet of floating ice.
The floe, silently drifting through the sea in the dark of night, slowly approached the unsuspecting cruise ship loaded with passengers.
To flow means to glide along.
The flow of the stream carried the little toy sailboat along with it.

flocks, phlox
A flock is a group of birds or other animals. Flocks is more than one group of birds or other animals.
Many flocks of birds that were heading south for the winter flew over my house.
Phlox is a North American plant that usually has clusters of colorful, scented flowers. They are often grown as a border plant.
The rock-garden, full of phlox of every color, attracted wildlife for the owners to observe.

floes, flows
Floes is more than one sheet of floating ice.
The cruise ship was unknowingly sailing into many massive floes.
When something flows, it glides along.
The stream flows through many picturesque valleys and fields.
