One of the most studied and prolonged struggles in Indian History have been the country’s war for independence. The British Colonial rulers who initially came to trade in India soon assumed charge of the Indian nation which was then ruled by Kings, Nawabs and other Royalty. The desire to break free from the British Rule sprung up in the 18th Century and gained momentum steadily. However the devices to achieve independence shifted from swords and guns to non violent measures of civil disobedience and non co operation under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

It was indeed a glorious moment for India when on 15th August 1947 the country became free of its British rulers and Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his first speech as Prime Minister of independent India. But not all was well for on this day the Indian nation was partitioned into two states, India and Pakistan, resulting in utter chaos and loss of life.

Each year Independence Day is observed with devotion to the country and freedom fighters are honored. The Prime Minister of India hoists the Indian Flag and delivers a special speech from Red Fort in New Delhi. Cultural celebrations and parades follow as part of the celebrations.

All Indian States have similar celebrations and the Indian Flag sways tall and proud throughout the country. Schools, colleges and other institutions have special programs to mark the day and educate children about India’s struggle for Independence.

Patriotic feelings of Indians are aroused on National Holidays like the Independence Day. People wearing small flags on their clothes and tri colors as wrist bands can be spotted everywhere.

Independence Day is a public holiday and all establishments and offices close for the day. However, almost all institutions have flag hoisting ceremonies in the morning. Colonies of residents also organize their own celebrations.

Though it is interesting to see occasions like the Independence Day observed with such fervor India as a nation still has a long way to go to break free from corruption, poverty, female infanticide and many other social evils that still plague free India.
