Into the Forest Again - a Review

This original spin on the classic tale was written by Shaunda Kennedy Wenger. Little Red Riding Hood is gonna go to her Grandma's house for a party. This is an anthropomorphic tale, as not only are the animals given a voice, but so are common items like platters.

Little Red Riding Hood is a bit nervous about her trek through the woods to her grandma's house, but she is confident she can make it there without running into any trouble. What she doesn't count on is the darkness and creepiness of the woods that send chills down her spine. She is carrying a huge cake for the party with her. There are many different woodland creatures that see this cake and want some of it for themselves.

Along the way, she is joined by a mouse, a bird, a duck, a porcupine, and a duck. Each exchange companionship and a special talent for helping Red Riding Hood on her journey to Grandma's in a possible exchange for just some crumbs from the scrumptious cake.

The bird spies Grandma dancing in her yard, but she has on a coat that is much too warm, and her big, pink tongue is hanging out of her mouth. Big pink tongue hanging out of her mouth? This sounds more like a wolf to me!

When the wolf sees Little Red Riding Hood and her gang of animal companions, she begins running toward them. Dressed in a ridiculous outfit she had made that very same morning, she makes quite a sight. She plans on crashing the party at Grandma's house. Truly, she plans on being welcomed.

But will she be? The axeman has left Grandma with an axe, and he has taught her how to use it. Grandma is fully prepared for a visit from another wolf. But this wolf is different, or so she says.

What will happen? Will Little Red Riding Hood make it safely to her Grandma's house? Will the wolf allow Little Red Riding Hood, Grandma, and the little woodland creatures survive? Has the wolf really changed? Or is she just pretending?

This is a great Halloween tale for young readers. Does the big bad wolf eat Grandma and Little Red Riding Hood, as well as all the woodland creatures?
