Learn Hindi Through English - Book Review

Guest Author - Preena Deepak

Learn Hindi in 30 Days Through English is one of the many series of self learning guides to Indian languages published by Fusion Books. I found the book useful to get acquainted with the basics of Hindi.

The book lives up to its claim and is easy to follow and understand. Most lessons have text boxes giving additional insights to enhance understanding as well as remind key points. Starting with the alphabet, lessons cover basic grammar, common expressions, simple phrases and conversational sentences.

As an added feature the book also includes common Hindi Idioms and Phrases, a mini Hindi – English Dictionary and some important Hindi Verbs. These special features are clubbed together at the end of the book and form a useful resource.

Learn Hindi in 30 Days Through English will help Indians in the South and other non Hindi speaking states to get acquainted with Hindi. It is also a useful aid for tourists and visitors from other countries. The most commonly needed terms and expressions are presented in Hindi as well as English. With this guide at hand, even tourists can communicate with locals and make their Indian experience less chaotic.

One of the main drawbacks of the book especially for those who wish to use the book for systematic study of Hindi is that the book does not give clear instructions on how alphabets are written. Though a lesson is dedicated to this, the material only includes a listing of the alphabets. Given the fact that Hindi alphabets are written with their peculiar curves and line patterns, this lesson is important to readers and one that must have been given more attention.

Learn Hindi in 30 Days Through English does have English translations and study instructions. However the English text seems to be literal translations of Hindi. Some portions of the text even seem humorous though it is not intended to be so. However since this book is a basic guide to Hindi, this flaw is not one that limits the utility of the book.

On the whole I find ‘Learn Hindi in 30 Days Through English’ a useful purchase. Tourists and visitors to India will find it indispensable in acquiring a working knowledge of Hindi and I have no doubt that this book will help anyone get started with India’s official language.

I bought a copy of ‘Learn Hindi in 30 Days Through English’ and this review is based on my experience using this book.
