Refresh for Fall with these Skin Care Solutions

Guest Author - Samantha Jackson

I had a great time with the beach goddess look this past summer, especially because it went so well with the bright lipsticks that have been so popular. Lately though, I noticed that instead of worrying about oil in my T-zone throughout the day, my makeup routine has been taking more time as I deal with flaky areas that just looked horrendous with the light coverage foundations that I have been using.

This, and the fact that I am intuitively reaching more and more for deeper lip shades like MAC Rebel lipstick and my go-to Chanel Dragon (sadly discontinued and I am down to my last tube!), tells me that itís time to revamp my skin care regimen for fall.

So out with the tinted moisturizers for now; it's time for more moisturizing formulas and a more high-maintenance routine - if only because cold weather tends to make me look sallow rather than porcelain.

Of course, every person's skin is different, but if you are at all like me: combination skin, blemish prone, and large pores (sounds depressing when I enumerate them like this) your skin could also stand some extra TLC for the rest of the year.

Today, Iíd like to share with you some of my methods for making sure that my skin is up to par, especially as parties and events where lots of pictures are taken now become more frequent.
  • My farewell-to-summer facial. After the last of my summer sundresses have been packed away, I head off to my favorite spa for a deep clean and a rejuvenating mask. I am unfortunately one of those people who breakout when the weather changes, but heading into fall season with deep-cleansed pores and well-moisturized face at least minimizes the damage.
  • I switch moisturizers, and add a serum to my nighttime routine. While summer was all about oil and shine control, for fall I focus on getting my skin all the moisture it needs; for this, there is nothing better than to use a heavier moisturizer this time of the year. As it gets progressively colder, I even use a serum right before slathering on moisturizer, especially on the chin area where I tend to flake.
  • Exfoliate like your life depends on it. Fall and winter skin tends to be duller, and I counteract it by exfoliating a bit more frequently than I would during other times of the year. I like Missha Aqua Peeling Gel: you just put some off the clear gel on your dry, cleansed face and rub gently with your fingertips until you feel the gel becoming coarser and coarseróitís actually the superficial skin layer which is being taken off without pain. I do this about once a week. The Peeling Gel was recommended to me by a friend who spent a year in Korea and told me it was wildly popular overseas. In the U.S, you can get it on Amazon. Other good ways to exfoliate would be to use a facial scrub (look to Kiehlís when you feel like splurging, or St. Ivesí if you are on a budget) at home, or get a glycolic peel at your dermatologist.
These skin care solutions help me tame my skin so I have a good canvas for wearing makeup.

Fall means more sophisticated looks for me: darker eyes, sultry lips and a switch to medium-to-full coverage dewy foundations. The combination of heavy moisturizers and heavy makeup translates to a lot of product to wash off my face at the end of the day, which is why my Clarisonic is also more handy than ever.
