Legal Genealogist Review

The Legal Genealogist is a wonderful resource written by Judy G. Russell. Her her personal bio she writes, “I’m a genealogist with a law degree, and my purpose here at The Legal Genealogist is, in part, to help folks understand the often arcane and even impenetrable legal concepts and terminology that are so very important to those of us studying family history. Without understanding the context in which events took place and records were created, we miss so much of both the significance and the flavor of what happened.”

I have enjoyed reading and learning from Judy’s blog. She has a legal background and understands the concepts and writes them in a way that those not in the legal field can understand. Some of the categories that Judy writes about are
  • Constitutions
  • Copyright
  • Court Cases
  • DNA
  • General
  • Legal definitions
  • Methodology
  • My family
  • Primary Law
  • Resources
  • Statutes
  • Terms of use
  • Uncategorized
One exciting feature is Sunday's blog; it is focused on DNA. It is a time to learn more about DNA, genealogy and keep updated on the latest news in this exciting emerging field in genealogy.

Some of the most recent articles written by Judy are Does your local society need a great speaker? Judy also lectures on the following topics:
  • A Genealogist's Guide to Women and the Law
  • Slavery and the Law before the Civil War
  • How Knowing the Law Makes Us Better Genealogist
  • Using Court Records to Tell Family Stories
  • Widows and Orphans under the Law
  • That First Trip to the Courthouse
  • Beyond Ancestry.com
  • Building a Family from Circumstantial Evidence
  • DNA Goes Genderless

Judy presented “Building a Family from Circumstantial Evidence” at Legacy Family Tree’s webinar. It is now available for purchase a the Legacy Family Tree Store.

I read Judy G. Russell's blog, The Legal Genealogist, often; I think you will enjoy and greatly benefit by visiting her website.
