There are ways to tell what kind of sound a word is imitating just by the letters it begins or ends with. Onomatopoeic words that have to do with water commonly begin with dr or spr.
If the words are imitating sounds that come from the back of the throat, they normally will begin with gr, whereas if the sound comes out the mouth after passing through the lips, teeth, and gums, it will normally begin with mu.
If the word imitates the sound of some type of collision, then it could begin with cl or th. It could also end with ng. If it begins with cl, it would mimic the sound of metal or glass object colliding. If it begins with th, it would copy dull sounds, such as heavy objects make when they hit wood or earth. Words ending in ng imitate sounds that resonate.
