Four Ways to Get Busy on Your Honeymoon

Guest Author - Kara Williams

No, silly. I don’t mean that kind of “get busy.” I mean, be productive. Accomplish something. Share your wealth, knowledge and resources with others. Or simply check some things off your “to do” list.

For Type A folks who can’t stand to just lie on the beach sipping daiquiris, here are some different ways to occupy your time on your honeymoon:

1. Write your thank-you notes. Chances are, you’ve already received and opened dozens of wedding gifts that have landed on your doorstep, courtesy of your new BFF (the UPS man). Why not bring along your list of gifts, who sent them, your wedding invitation address list (you do have all of those at your fingertips, right?) and your stationery and knock off a few thank-you cards while you’re sitting by the pool. If you’re traveling in a foreign country, you probably don’t want to spend the extra money for air mail, so bring them back home to mail. Check out this article I wrote for tips on how to write thank-you notes.

2. Volunteer. You can book a full-on altruistic honeymoon vacation through Global Volunteers (www.globalvolunteers.org). Or simply contact the chamber of commerce of the town you’ll be visiting on your honeymoon and ask for ways you might be able to help out in the local community in the short-term: maybe working a stint in a soup kitchen, helping out with a building project or barn raising, or donating books to the local library.

3. Stay fit. You'll likely indulge in your all-inclusive resort’s expansive buffets, drink plenty of Mai Tai’s or fully enjoy the local cuisine—whether it’s pasta or paella. So, why not carve out an hour every day to walk the beach, sightsee on foot, check out the resort’s gym or otherwise creatively work a little fitness into your honeymoon. Your jeans will thank you upon your return home.

4. Talk about your future. If you haven’t already, why not make a list of goals you and your new spouse want to accomplish in first year of marriage? Maybe it’s to start saving enough money for a down payment on a house. (Or simply paying off credit card debt.) Maybe you want to commit to at least one date night a week—just the two of you, no friends allowed. Perhaps you want to spend your weekends exploring romantic destinations near your hometown. Maybe you want to get your new house painted, decorated or remodeled. It’s so fun to think about the future and make plans to make together—there's no better time to do that than when you’re still flush with happiness from your fabulous wedding!
