Having manicured nails are a great way to finish off a fashion look or to uplift your mood. Whenever I get a fresh manicure or pedicure I know I smile a little when I look at them. Every little bit of a confidence boost is worth it. Which make since considering how often our hands are in the limelight – we touch our faces, gesture when we talk, and shake hands just for starters.
There are some occasions that call for a subdued look rather than a bright nail polish or fancy nail art provides. Those are fun but not always appropriate. While a clean set of nails are lovely on their own sometimes I like a more polished look. I have never been a fan of the traditional French manicures on my own nails but I do love a Sheer French Manicure. It provides a beautiful every day look that blends into an outfit but still manages to provide a finished appearance.
How to Apply a Sheer French ManicureI am not a nail artist by any means and I am sure there are many ways to do this but I want to share with you what works for me. I have found it to be a simple stress free way to dress the nail and I hope you will give it a try.
First, the products I use for this look:
- Sally Hansen Hard as Nails in Natural – it is a clear polish with a pink tint.
- Sally Hansen New Lengths – in 09 Sheer French Buff.
- Julep Freedom Polymer Top Coat
The Application Process:I put on the pink tint on first and only to the pink portion of the nail beds. I apply it to both hands and allow them to dry.
After a few minutes I work on the tips. It is important not to load the brush up with the sheer polish to maintain control. In short sideways strokes I apply the polish in one direction. I usually apply one coat but if you want it brighter you can add a second. The great thing about applying a sheer polish on the tip is that it is very forgiving of hand jitters.
After both hands are done and have dried a few minutes I apply the top coat. You want to make sure the tips are pretty dry so it does not budge when you brush over it. A top coat is necessary, as it blends the two polishes providing a seamless finish.
In case you need a little extra visual direction I created a simple five minute video to take you through my steps. I hope it helps and that you give this au natural look a try.
