The advance of transportation from the invention of the wheel to the Hubble is a fascinating story. Can we imagine going through on single day without wheels? The history of transport is brought to life at museums throughout the world.
* Swiss Transport museum in Lucerne, Switzerland - Loaded with more than 3000 exhibits, it is a mine of information on the history and development of transportation and communication. Nautirama, multimedia display presents the history of ships. Hiflyer, the Helium filled balloon carries its passengers to a height of 120 feet to offer a spectacular aerial view of the museum and the surrounding area.
To make transportation faster and easier our ancestors built roads and tunnels without any of the complicated machinery and explosives that we have today. The 15 km tunnel through the Swiss Alps is an engineering marvel achieved at the cost of hundreds of lives and years of toil. Relive the building of the tunnel through the Gotthard Tunnel Show and experience the lives of the men and women who slogged to build the tunnel. The tunnel is considered a major engineering accomplishment.
This museum has the only IMAX theatre in the whole country.

* Golden Gate Railroad Museum, San Francisco - What would a Pharmacist do with an old steam engine? An odd question, don’t you think? But not for Michael Mangini. He had her repaired and running in the Railfair of 1991 in Sacramento. And the collection has grown since providing a “hands on” experience for visitors to the Golden Gate Railroad Museum in San Francisco.
This museum offers “Rent a Locomotive” program where you are actually the engineer running historic trains.

* The Seashore Trolley Museum, Maine – If I said, “You can ride by rail on the roads of Maine and enjoy the countryside scenery”, you will ask “In this century?”
Yes, it is possible through the efforts of the Seashore Trolley Museum. They collect and restore streetcars, trolleys and related artifacts from Boston Street cars to snow removal equipment.
You can operate one of the museum’s antique trolley cars in this museum. This is the oldest and largest electric railway museum in the world.
