Appreciate Your Body Parts
As women we tend to "pick" at our bodies more often than is good for psyche. For whatever personal reason we feel the need to look in the mirror or down at our bodies and be hypercritical of bulges, symmetry, color, length, and pretty much everything in between.
When I think of the cliché "we are our own worst enemy" this picking that we do often comes to mind. To me it is a form of beating ourselves down that builds up over time. When we look at how often we build ourselves up, for most of us it is not enough, it is easy to see why our self-esteem and body image is bruised and battered. I am not saying it does not get help from outside forces but do we really need to kick-start it? I think not.
Appreciate Your Body Parts
I would like to recommend this little mental exercise I have been building on for whenever you do this. When you catch yourself picking at something, especially something physical, force yourself to look at more than one option and not only your "perfect" one.
For example, for me, I have a crooked middle finger on my right hand. I have always had this crooked finger. Whenever I look down at it I think about how much I hate it and wish I didn't have a crooked finger. Of course the first alternative is to have a straight perfect finger that I desire but what if the other option were true? What if the finger did not work or was missing altogether? This shift in thinking makes me appreciate my crooked finger so much more. Do I still want what I perceive as a perfect finger? Of course I do; but I really do appreciate the one I have, a feeling I did not have before this mental exercise.
The next time you begin to complain to yourself about your thunder thighs, crooked eyes, flat buttocks, or whatever it is you complain about to yourself (or to your friends), really consider the alternatives including the ones that make your option look like perfection. But please do not compare yourself to other people -- always keep the insight on yourself and leave others out of the equation. Keep this an internal exercise all about you -- and appreciating what you have and how it works for you.
We need to make an active choice to stop hurting ourselves and continue to build up and not to beat down.
