30-something Stephanie Plum has just lost her job, had her car repossessed, and has pawned most of her furniture and possessions to survive; she needs a job badly, and taking her mother’s advice, visits her cousin, Vinnie to apply for a filing job. The job has been filled, so she talks him into letting her be a bounty hunter for his pawnshop/bail bondsman business. One for the Money is the first of the extremely popular Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich, which are humorous/satirical/police procedural thrillers.

Stephanie is a lower-class girl from New Jersey with questionable morals, and is trying to bring in Joseph Morelli, a former acquaintance and cop who skipped on bail for a murder charge. The payoff is $10,000, and Stephanie needs it to get back on her feet. She knows nothing about being a bounty hunter, and makes plenty of mistakes, even with the help of Ranger, a very successful bounty hunter who has been willing to show her the ropes. Although the book is humorous, there is plenty of suspense, and readers will be on the edge of their seats worrying whether or not Stephanie will survive. Stephanie finds herself in several difficult, albeit comical, predicaments, including pissing off a championship boxer who delights in terrorizing and murdering women.

One for the Money is light, fast moving, well-written, and upbeat. There are twists and turns throughout, with a surprise ending. Evanovich has a way with words, and there is no shortage of laughs which are addicting. It’s no wonder that this series is so popular, and those readers who don't mind a little bit of off-color prose will want to read this and the subsequent novels immediately.
