Over the last decade, digital crafting has become very popular. Many enjoy the ease of creating beautiful totally-digital projects on their computer. With all the sharing sites online, it’s easy to upload your digital masterpiece to share on sites such as PinterestR or YouTubeR.

But for the last two years, I have found myself yearning for the tactile satisfaction of creating traditional paper crafts, which has been my favorite craft since childhood. I thought I was alone until I notice the increase in popularity for a new type of digital craft that results in a physical project made from materials, such as paper and fabric, that can be easily cut. But, the fun is that the crafter doesn’t do the cutting. This new craft method is commonly referred to as design and cut.

Design and cut blends the best of both worlds. The crafter can still enjoy the ease and flexibility of designing their crafts on their computer and also have the satisfaction of creating a physical handmade project. With the new personal electronic cutting machines, the accompanying software and a little glue or thread, the crafter can create anything from paper crafts, home decor or fashion items to cases for their mobile phone.

This March, the newest design and cut product called Circuit ExploreTM was released by Provo Craft and Novelty, Inc. and is available both in stores and online. One important note is that this new machine comes with free online design software, called Circuit Design SpaceTM, with 50,000+ digital images. It’s free to explore this new design space for inspiration and with a subscription to Circuit Design Space online, you have access to the image library. You can choose from many Make It Now pre-designed projects or create a new project from scratch and your own images with the Cut What You Want feature. One nice improvement in this newest cutting machine is the Cut SmartTM duel carriage head. One head is for cutting and the other is for a pen or marker. This eliminates the need to manually switch the two heads. Also, making cutting decisions for various materials is simplified with the new Smart SetTM technology. You can cut many types of materials including paper, vinyl, iron on transfers, card stock, fabric and poster board. Your cartridges from pervious Circuit machines can be used in the new Circuit Design Space.

Other electronic cutting machines include the Boss Kut Gazelle, Inspiration by Pazzles, Eclips by SizzixR, ScanNCut by BrotherTM and Silhouette America’s Cameo and Portrait.
