The Argentine Triangle Book Review

Title: The Argentine Triangle
Author: Allan Topol
Published: 2014, SelectBooks, Inc.
No. of Pages: 289
Cover Price: $16.95 US

Craig Page, newly named CIA Director, has just returned from a dangerous assignment that was fully endorsed by the President, but went awry and resulted in the death of the corrupt Chinese President, Zhou. During an early meeting with his direct boss, friend, and mentor, Betty Richards, he learns that he has a meeting with the President and his top advisor shortly. Betty has a bad feeling about the meeting, and since President Treadwell defers to his best friend, Edward Bryce, who is a typical narcissistic politician, Craig is made the scapegoat and fired. Craig has dinner with his girlfriend, Elizabeth, and learns she is moving to Paris to further her career; Craig knows that Zhou’s men will be seeking revenge, and can’t risk moving to Paris with Elizabeth, so they part ways. Craig leaves to have plastic surgery so he will not be recognizable, race cars, and stay under the radar.

A year later, Betty contacts Craig to let him know that his close friend and colleague, Ted Dunn (retired from the CIA), has disappeared while on secret assignment in Argentina; Craig agrees to go find out what happened to his friend and gets involved in a twisted plot of international intrigue laced with corruption, greed, and a struggle for supremacy at the cost of dozens of lives and the well-being of both the citizens of South America and the USA.

The Argentine Triangle is well-written, and is definitely an “edge-of-your-seat” novel. Not only is the story fascinating, but the characters are well-defined and believable. While it seems unlikely that the CIA director would send retired and fired agents with secret unlimited funds to carry out a sensitive mission that could have far-reaching consequences, readers should remember that this is fiction, after all, and when politicians are involved, anything goes, especially where power is the prize. For some of the characters, things are not as they seem, and the use of loved ones is fair game; danger or death is of minor concern in the end.

The suspense throughout the novel makes for a good read, and also makes readers wonder what really goes on behind closed doors in our own political world. For readers who enjoy political intrigue, this book is definitely recommended.

Special thanks to Tracy Minsky of Media Muscle for supplying a review copy of this excellent novel.
