Wearing Trends to Suit Your Height

Wearing Trends to Suit Your Height
There is all this talk about what’s “in” this spring, like amazing pleats, suede skirts and tank top dresses. But, what happens when you are too short for the trends? The average model is 5 feet 8 inches or 5 feet 9 inches at best. Their Amazon stature is what draws us to them. What then, is the solution for petite women?

Embrace, embrace, embrace. This can be said a hundred times, but until women actually do it, they will be lost in the politics of fashion-in today; out tomorrow. Remember: Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. and accepting this cliché is the only way to make it through. Following trends are pointless when unflattering. Know what works for you and then tailor it to suit your body type. (A free style secret).

The Midi Skirt is first on the list. It is an interesting look to pull off because it stops mid-calf, (hence, the term “midi”). Usually when pieces fall this low, they cut off the leg, making it appear to be shorter. No fear. Wearing heels easily solves this “problem”, preferably pointed toe pumps, which gives a taller illusion. Wedged heels can work as well for comfort.

Another plus for midis are their variety in size and shape, which provide options for added height. For instance, A-line suede skirts are a retro 70s glam. Pair this look with a camisole and strappy heel sandals. Mimicking strong, powerful gladiators makes anyone appear to be larger than life! Fitted midis are great too. Their librarian-esque flair adds sass and sophistication! Complete the ensemble by wearing a short blazer and button it to cinch the waist. The hourglass shape always brings vertical attention. Kitten heels are a great accent to this outfit, as they are cute and corky, matching the nerdy librarian look.

Contrasting pieces are also a must. This is when looser tops are mixed with tighter bottoms and vice versa. The black and white duo does wonders for this concept, especially when white is the bottom piece. Go all out with a black turtleneck and crisp, white bell bottom jeans. The color blocking on this outfit alone, is a show stopper. It then becomes a masterpiece with hunter green stilettos. Could you imagine how fabulous this would look? Height is no longer an issue when style is the overriding factor. Look to wow people with your fashion. Be unashamed and classy, of course. That goes without saying.

Now, it is time for the opposite effect-having a fitted bottom and loose top. Choose the bottom piece wisely, so that the top transitions well. Skirts, shorts, or pants should accentuate your silhouette. Think of the hourglass shape mentioned earlier. Curves speak louder than height.

The last fad on this short list are tank top dresses. Their combination of length and skin give automatic height. These casual gowns are full of material, making you look longer. (Fashion Tidbit: If it is too long, just tie a knot on the side of in the back. It is très chic. The spaghetti strap sleeves free the arms and the low collar lets those clavicles shine. Finishing everything off with platform sneakers for an extra boost.

With everything said, it may seem counterintuitive, but being short is not an issue; insecurity is. These tips are just that-tips. They are not rules to live by. If you take them into consideration, fine. However, it is important to note that height is not a fashion issue. Wanting to look taller is a preference, and not a requirement to stay on trend.
