Upper elementary and middle school students are sometimes hard to reach. Claudette Curl is the Technology Teacher/Library Media Specialist at The Center for Language, Culture, and Communication Arts in Lansing, MI. She has put together a 50 slide PowerPoint presentation called Learn the Library!
This isn't a passive click and talk. There are interactive questions that need to be answered correctly in order to advance in the presentation. Topics include library layout, parts of a book, fiction and non-fiction, and biographies.
This presentation is perfect for the new student who hasn't been taught how to use the library. It can be used as a library or classroom center.PowerPoint presentation on your library. Try using it as a group refresher after students return to school after a holiday break. Public libraries may add the link to their websites to encourage patrons to learn how to properly use the library.
For a creative lesson on PowerPoint challenge students to design their own presentation on your library. They have an excellent example, a focus for the presentation, and a purpose. Students will always benefit from creating a storyboard of any PowerPoint presentation before touching the computer. This is similar to creating an essay outline. It focuses thought and helps prevent students from becoming bogged down in details.
