Daffodils in the Rose Garden

Daffodils, which you would plant in the fall months, make excellent spring companions in the rose garden. Bulbs can be found at a variety of sources from the Internet to garden centers and big box stores. If you’re looking for variety, quality and excellent service Brent and Becky’s Bulbs in Gloucester, VA is a personal favorite of mine.

I’ve ordered from multiple bulb companies and while some shipments have been fine, I’ve also received shriveled bulbs that didn’t come up, bulbs with insects living in them and bulbs with mold. While most companies will usually offer a replacement shipment or refund, this is time consuming. It also makes the simple and fun process of planting bulbs more difficult than it needs to be.

The daffodil shipments I’ve received from Brent and Becky’s have been plump, firm and fresh looking. The bulbs have all come up reliably in the spring. Keep in mind you’ll need to make sure the bulbs you select are recommended for your zone. Brent and Becky’s offers a selection they have divided into 14 different divisions of daffodils. Every color, size and shape imaginable are offered, all have excellent color photos. Each bulb has a description of its growth, the zones it’s recommended for as well as the size measurement of the bulb you’ll receive.

If you’re new to bulbs the daffodil is an excellent way to get started. Compared to other bulbs daffodils are extremely disease, insect and rodent resistant. They have even been known to deter underground vermin from their garden area. Planting daffodils in the same bed as tulips can keep your tulip bulbs from being eaten. It’s not too far fetched to assume they can also have a similar deterrent effect on things which might find your roses tasty. Daffodils if grown in the proper conditions with sunlight and moist, but not soggy soil will generally multiply each year without maintenance. Who doesn’t want additional flowers year after year without any work?

If you live near Gloucester, VA you can tour Brent and Becky’s bulb farm. They plant the majority of the bulbs they sell at the farm so if you come at the correct time of year you can actually see the bulbs you’re considering right in the garden. I sent an e-mail with some daffodil questions to their contact us link and also asked when the best time to visit would be. I received a very prompt response from Becky herself. Visiting towards the end of March or beginning of April will provide you with the best spring show and September to October is excellent for summer bulbs.

I’m always looking for something additional to spruce up my rose bed. Wherever you decide to purchase your spring daffodil bulbs from, we’re nearing the time for planting in most parts of the country. Try hitting your local garden center or on-line bulb shop to make your spring rose garden extra eye catching.
