Ghost Whisperer -- Horror Show
Guest Author - Dani M. Sanders

Episode 3x15
Original air date: April 25, 2008

In the opening scene, Professor Rick Payne is trying to talk Melinda into hiring a college student named Kylie to straighten out the books at her store. Kylie is the daughter of Rick's late mentor, an economics professor. She lost her merit scholarship and needs the money. Also, Rick suspects that Kylie might be haunted because she recently started exhibiting strange behavior. At first Melinda is resistant, but when Kylie actually shows up with a shadowy figure in a hat and black coat following her, Melinda gives the girl the job.

The next day, Kylie goes to the shop and tells Melinda that she doesn't have to give her a job if she is only doing it because of pressure from Rick. All of a sudden, Kylie is attacked by a swarm of flies (real or ghostly, I'm not sure) which freaks her out and causes her to fall backwards through the store's glass door. While Delia runs to get Jim to tend to Kylie's injuries, one of the dolls in the store's display window turns its head and says "Finish it!" in a creepy whisper. It is clear that both Melinda and Kylie saw and heard the doll. Jim gets there, patches up Kylie's arm, and tries to ask her about strange occurrences around her while Melinda is off getting ice. The questioning makes Kylie skittish and she rushes off to her dorm.

Later, Rick and Melinda discuss the possibility that it might be Kylie's father who is haunting her to get her back on track with her major in economics. However, it seems strange that the father would start haunting her after he has been dead for four years and that he isn't speaking directly to Melinda. They decide they should find out if Kylie has had someone else close to her die more recently. This, of course, doesn't go well. It never does the first time that Melinda tells someone that she sees ghosts. Kylie once again turns tail and runs, but not before quitting the job with Melinda.

After a bit of investigation, Rick and Melinda figure out that Kylie was friends with a guy named Toby who was making a "shockumentary". His gimmick was to film students recreating the scenes that scared them the most from other horror movies. After Melinda confronts Kylie with knowledge of her involvement, she admits that she knows she's being haunted. Kylie thinks that Toby blames her for his death because she wasn't there to help him with the stunt that killed him. When Toby finally shows himself, it comes out that he wanted Kylie to face her real fear: she's afraid of disappointing her late father by admitting that she would rather be a filmmaker than an economist like the rest of the family. Toby also needed to face his real fear, which was telling Kylie that he loved her. Rick explains to Kylie that it was her father who convinced him to switch his major to supernatural studies and that he would want Kylie to follow her passion. Kylie explains to Toby that she knew he loved her and she felt the same way. With all that out in the open, Toby is able to cross over into the light.

The writers dropped a hint toward the continuing storyline of Melinda's battle with the dark side. Toby hints that Melinda is frightened by slasher films because she has issues with being abandoned by her father. In the final scene, a buried memory of a man with his bloodied face covered by a clear mask surfaces while Melinda is falling asleep. Hopefully they will give us closure on that soon.
