Alabama - 18" Quilt Block

We'll begin our tour of the states through patchwork with this quilt block pattern made of squares and rectangles.

Fabric Key:

Cutting Instructions:

Cut seventeen 2-1/2" squares.

Cut sixteen 2-1/2" squares and eight 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles.

Cut eight 2-1/2" squares and four 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles.

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1: With right sides together and using a scant 1/4" seam, sew an orange 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle to the long side of a yellow 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle. Sew another orange rectangle to the other long side of the yellow rectangle.  Repeat for a total of four orange/yellow/orange squares.

Step 2: Using the blue, orange, and yellow 2-1/2" squares, make five nine-patch units according to the diagrams below:

make 1 for center

make 4 for corners

Step 3:  Arrange the orange/yellow squares and the nine patch units as shown in Diagram 1.  With right sides together and using a scant 1/4" seam, sew together to form rows as shown in Diagram 2. Sew rows as shown in Diagram 3 to finish the block.
