From Socialist to Republican
Steve Beren is a political activist, writer, and speaker as well as a politician, who lives in Seattle, Washington. Beren was born in New York on September 9, 1951 to a Jewish family, but he later became an atheist. He also espoused the ideology of the Socialist Workers Party and became a Castro supporter. He was an antiwar activist during the Vietnam era. In 1987, Beren relocated from New York to Seattle, where he serves as the director of production operations for an internet marketing company.
After leaving the Socialist Party in 1990, Beren joined the Democratic Party. Then in 1995, he became a Christian, but remained a member of the Democratic Party until 2001. With the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, he began to turn away from the Democratic Party’s blindness and lethargy regarding foreign policy, and at age 52, like Ronald Reagan, Beren became a Republican.
Plan for Halting Illegal Immigration
Beren ran unsuccessfully against Democrat Jim McDermott for Congress in the 2006 campaign. But Beren’s proposal for solving the illegal immigration problem sounds like a workable one. The plan offers four steps:
1. Secure the border: Border security must be strengthened, and a fence must be erected on the southern border.
2. Eliminate the reason for illegal immigration: Businesses must require that all of their employees be U. S. citizens. Those businesses that hire illegals must face severe punishment. It is only dishonest businesses who seek to avoid paying a living wage and also seek to avoid paying proper taxes who hire illegals. Such illegal activity destroys the level playing field for all businesses; therefore, the honest businesses that follow the rules are hurt. If this step is followed, many illegals will return to their country of origin, but more importantly those who truly want to come here will know they must do so legally.
3. Stop free services: The U.S. now provides to illegal immigrants those services which the American taxpayer has paid for, such as public education, Medicare and Medicaid, and food stamps; illegals are also given the privilege of acquiring a license to drive and other services at taxpayer expense. They receive all of this without paying taxes, because they work for businesses that do no report their wages. (See step 2) If these services and welfare were no longer available, the illegals would be encouraged to immigrate only legally.
4. Enforce the law: Any illegal who breaks any law should face immediate deportation. Instead of proceeding with charges for any other crime which results in further waste of tax-payer dollars, the offender must simply face deportation proceedings.
A Purpose in Life
Steve Beren, who calls himself a “9/11 Republican,” feels that because of the war on terror and the fanatics who would destroy America, he needs to help young people understand that danger, especially given the left turn taken by the universities, where tenured radicals use their classrooms as pulpits to spread their treacherous ideology.
