The next block in our state block series is New Jersey. This block is made with squares and triangles. The block is made up of four quarters that are exactly the same.

Here is a diagram of the block with the template names and I've left it uncolored for easy recognition.

There are four fabrics used in this block, described as light, medium light, medium dark and dark

Cutting Instructions

Light fabric:

  • cut four 2⅞” x 2⅞” squares, cut diagonally to make 8 triangles(E)

Medium Light fabric:

  • cut eight 3⅜” x 3⅜” squares (D),

Medium fabric:

  • cut eight 2½” x 2½” squares (A)

Dark Fabric:

  • cut eight 2⅞” x2⅞” squares, cut diagonally to make 16 triangles (C)

Step 1.

Take two D’s and sew them together. On each end of the D unit, sew a C to make a unit look like this:

Step 2.

Now take an A and sew a C and an E to the right side and bottom of the A square. Make another ACE unit, but this time sew the C to the right side and the E to the bottom of the A square. (see diagram)

Step 3.

Sew each of the AEC units to either side of one DC unit. (see diagram)

Step 4.

Well done, you have made one quarter of the New Jersey Block. Now make another three quarter sections. Then sew the four quarters together to form a beautiful 12" finished block.

Step 5.

Here is your completed 12 “ finished block.
