For devout Elvis Presley fans perhaps nothing is more important than celebrating Elvis Week and if you are lucky visiting Elvis’ beloved Graceland. However it is also National Immunization Awareness Month. Take a few moments to see what the Center for Disease Control has to say about receiving the appropriate vaccine for proper immunization.

Monthly Events

Cataract Awareness Month
. Aug. 1-31. Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. There are close to 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older with cataracts. More than half of all Americans will have cataracts by age 80. For more information, browse www.preventblindness.org.

Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. August 1 - August 31
Included in this month will be information about amblyopic*, a condition that can affect 2 to 3% of children and cause permanent vision loss. Also included will be tips about preventing eye injuries in children, signs of possible eye problems and general eye health.

National Immunization Awareness Month. Aug. 1-31. Each year in the United States, tens of thousands of people die because of vaccine-preventable diseases or their complications and even more experience pain, suffering and disability. World Breastfeeding Week. Aug. 1-7. Breastfeeding advocates, health-care professionals and social-service agencies focus attention on the importance and benefits of breastfeeding. For more information, browse http://worldbreastfeedingweek.org/

Elvis Week
. Aug. 11-19. Each year Elvis fans from around the world visit Memphis. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death (Aug. 16, 1977) at his beloved home, Graceland Mansion. For more information, browse www.elvis.com.

National Night Out

Perseid Meteor Showers. Aug. 12. Among the best-known and most spectacular meteor showers are the Perseids. Advice from the NASA Science site, "Got a calendar? Circle this date: Sunday, August 12th. Next to the circle write "all night" and "Meteors!" Attach the above to your refrigerator in plain view so you won't miss the 2007 Perseid meteor shower.
