Have you been looking for a few Thanksgiving-themed baby names? If so, here are some ideas...
"Thankful" Names
The Puritans were well-known for their affinity for virtue names such as Charity, Prudence and Temperance. In fact, one name they commonly used for females was Thankful (or Thankfull).
It you'd like something a little more subtle, there's the male name Jadon, which is thought to mean "thankful" in Hebrew (though it could also be interpreted as "he will judge").
More exotic possibilities include the male name Shakir (Arabic for "thankful") and the female name Tendai (Shona for "be thankful"). There are also the unisex names Temitope (Yoruba for "enough to give thanks") and Taonga (Tumbuka for "we are thankful").
Thanksgiving Namesakes
Thanksgiving in the U.S. is usually traced back to the Pilgrims, a group of settlers who established a colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620.
Some of the best-known Pilgrims were Myles Standish, William Bradford, John Carver, and Oceanus (the baby boy born mid-journey).
Other male names that belonged to various Mayflower passengers include: Bartholomew, Christopher, Degory, Edmund, Edward, Elias, Francis, George, Gilbert, Giles, Henry, Issac, James, Jasper, Joseph, Love, Moses, Peregrine, Peter, Resolved, Richard, Robert, Roger, Samuel, Solomon, Stephen, Thomas and Wrestling.
In terms of female names, there were: Alice, Ann, Catherine, Constance, Damaris, Desire, Dorothy, Eleanor, Elizabeth, Ellen, Humility, Joan, Mary, Priscilla, Remember, Rose, Sarah and Susanna.
Canadian Thanksgiving can be traced back even further than 1620 -- to English explorer Martin Frobisher, who celebrated a thanksgiving in 1578.
Earlier North American thanksgivings were also attributed to Spanish conquistadors Francisco Vasquez de Coronado (in Texas, in 1541) and Pedro Menendez de Aviles (in Florida, in 1565).
