Ulcerative Colitis – Naturopathic Treatments

Unlike Conventional Medicine which focuses on ulcerative colitis as an illness, Naturopathy takes the perspective of “whole body” wellness. Naturopathic treatments reach toward the root cause of ulcerative colitis and ultimately seek to remove or repair what the body has failed to on its own, due to a variety of blockages – which are also treated. Conventional Medicine, in comparison, reaches toward making the symptoms “go away,” leaving the root cause intact.

Ulcerative Colitis May Be Caused By, and You May Be Tested and Treated For:
  • Food Allergies
  • Toxic metals such as mercury and aluminum (found in antacids and antiperspirants)
  • Artificial preservatives
  • Parasites
  • Imbalance of bad bacteria in the GI tract.

    Tests for Ulcerative Colitis Include:
  • Urine test
  • Tongue test (the checking of the specific color of your tongue. See my post in the Stomach Issues Forum
titled “Tongue Color As Helath Indicator” Sign in and share your results!)
  • Glucose test
  • Body fat analysis
  • Blood tests to check for: Anemia associated with internal bleeding, high white blood cell count indicating
    infection
  • Stool testing for infection and bleeding in the rectum and colon
  • Colonoscopy or Sigmoidoscopy to check the colon and rectum for ulcers, inflammation or bleeding
  • Biopsy of colon tissue
  • Barium enema x-ray for a good view of the colon and rectum walls

    Treatments for Ulcerative Colitis Include:
  • Herbal Supplements (Which may include aid in getting the blood flowing. Your body is unique and will need
    specific supplements)
  • Nutritional Supplements (Because your body is uniquely yours, individual supplements are prescribed)
  • Lifestyle changes:
  • Diet (Foods or food additives that may have an adverse affect on your body will be eliminated)
  • Exercise (moving the body keeps the blood from stagnating. Stagnation of the blood leads to many
    body ailments.)
  • Relaxation techniques (Relaxation techniques are for getting the body into a state where it is not
under the constant stress which compromises health by affecting the organs and prevents the body from
healing itself. Practices such yoga or the martial arts offer both relaxation and exercise.)
  • If the system is truly beyond repair, removal of the colon or parts of the colon may be the last resort to
    treating ulcerative colitis.

It is my belief that treating the body as a sentient, intelligent, living organism is the optimum way to approaching wellness. Chemical medications tend to toxify the body, and should be used in emergency situations only, and even then, with caution. Here is to your best health and love of yourself!

*Please know that I am not a medical doctor or a health practitioner. I cannot diagnose your stomach problems nor can I guarantee a cure. I am here to share my knowledge, which applications have worked for me and to offer suggestions of where you may go physically, emotionally and spiritually for healing and self-empowerment. If you choose to explore alternative medicine, do not independently stop taking your prescribed medications. Always consult with your current doctor as well as your new practitioner when changing your medical program. Find a Naturopath near you.
