Bill Nye Makes Science Fun
Guest Author - Marci Ann Peterson

I'm having a nostalgic month here. I am sitting here thinking about all the great shows that I watched when I was growing up. And believe it or not some of the shows we watched when we were younger are in syndication. Now our kids can grow up watching the shows we watched while we were growing up. Continue taking a walk down memory lane with me.

Do you remember Disney's Bill Nye The Science Guy? If you saw him only once you will not be able to forget him! He is a tall lanky scientist dressed in a lab coat and a bow-tie. He mixes together the seriousness of science with humor.

While Bill Nye is not on the regular TV programming, some PBS stations have Bill Nye The Science Guy showing throughout the week. Our cable company has Bill Nye showing on the PBS Station on Wednesday afternoons. Check your TV schedule to find out if Bill Nye is showing in your area.

I love using Bill Nye The Science Guy in our home school to help teach, reinforce, and explain science principles to my girls. I also love that Bill teaches these principles in a way that is easy for the kids as well as the parents to understand.

Whether he is talking about the Food Web, the heart, space, or any of the other topics that are featured in the show it is done in an easy to understand and interesting way.

The show also features guest stars, like Penn and Teller, Candace Cameron, Alfonso Ribeiro and more.

As well as having Bill Nye talk about each scientific principle he shows you through models, pictures, and experiments. They also have an experiment that you can do with your child to help illustrate what they are learning.

Science was never my strong subject in school, so this helps me in teaching my girls science. I like that I don't have to do all the research and planning. I also like that I don't have to come up with all the different science experiments myself. This show helps give me starting point in my science curriculum.

But the thing that I love the most about Bill Nye The Science Guy is that fact that my girls love to watch his show. So, it seems more like a reward than a chore when they get to watch Bill Nye for Science. Finally a way to teach science that is fun and easy to understand! Now if they used Bill Nye more when I was in school maybe I could have passed science class.
