After 10 years, Ronnie McCall contacts her old friend Mitch Blaine. He picks her up at the airport and takes her to his restored PBY-5A, a World War II amphibious aircraft, where he lives. Unfortunately, when they arrive, someone is onboard and tries to kill Mitch. He is puzzled, but busy getting Ronnie comfortable. Ronnie has traveled from the US to ask Mitch’s help in finding her husband and brother who have been missing for over six months. Both were special ops officers, and Ronnie was told that they were dead, but recently found out that the government lied, and that both her brother and husband may still be alive.
Mitch agrees to take his plane, along with his best friend, Beyer, a semi-retired physicist, the 8,000 miles to the Escalante area of Utah to investigate the disappearances. During the trip, there are several attempts to kill Mitch, Ronnie, and Beyer, luckily all unsuccessful. The story, while laced with a bit of the supernatural, is interesting, fast-moving, and suspenseful. Lewin has created characters that are likeable, and the ending is definitely a surprise.
The book is well-written, and easy to follow, especially for pilots and other fans of vintage aircraft and flying. It is also full of interesting facts that are relevant to the story; Lewin has done his research on several subjects and is very knowledgeable about aircraft and flying; he is a professional aviator. Because he is Australian, some of the writing reflects the different idioms used there, and that makes the book quite appealing. The Escalante Enigma is fairly unique in the suspense thriller/genre, and definitely holds a reader’s interest. If you are a fan of aviation, interesting physics facts, or just something a little different, this is a book you will most likely enjoy.
Special thanks to Rod Lewin for supplying a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
