Tabletop Christmas Tree

Tabletop Christmas Tree
metallic paper Christmas treeAre you ready for some wintry wonderland Christmas décor? You can easily get the magical wintry effect with metallic gift wrapping paper, which we used in making this tabletop Christmas tree that stands a little over a foot tall. You can also use non-metallic paper to make the tree, and then give it a generous sprinkling of glue and glitter. Let’s get started!

You will need:

* Thin cardstock, 12 x 12 inches
* Metallic gift wrapping paper
* Stapler
* Masking tape
* White glue
* Narrow double sided tape
* Scissors
* Ruler
* Pencil

Roll the cardstock into a narrow cone shape, and staple the cardstock to keep it in place. Further secure the edge with masking tape so that the cone doesn't lose its shape. Trim the base of the cone so that it stands level.

Cut a three-inch circle from the gift wrapping paper, and make a slit from the edge to the center. Roll this into cone around tip of the cardstock cone, and glue into place. This will disguise any gaps in the fringe later on.

Cut a strip of wrapping paper two inches wide along the length of the paper. Fold this in half lengthwise, then adhere the two long edges with a thin line of glue. Using the scissors, make a fringe along the folded edge, cutting about ¾ of an inch starting from the fold. Make as many fringed strips as needed to go around the cone from base to tip.

Now cover the cone with the fringes. Work from the bottom up, adhering one row at a time. Take a fringed strip and wrap it around the base, cutting it off at the point where it overlaps the end of the fringe by about ¼ inch. Apply double sided tape to the top of the fringe and adhere the fringe to the cone.

Wrap the fringe again around the cone so that the fringe overlaps the first row, cut the strip with a bit of an overlap at the end, and tape it to the cone. Repeat until you reach the tip of the cone.

Tip: As you progress towards the tip of the cone, you may have to cut notches at the top of fringe so that it fits the shape of the cone and thus sticks better.

Cut or punch five small star shapes from silver metallic paper. Fold each star in half, stack them, and then stick the halves together in the form of a “book”. Apply glue to the bottom of the star, and attach it to the top of the tree.

Make several more trees in different sizes and colors and arrange them in a group on a tabletop for some handcrafted holiday décor. Enjoy the season!
