In this short, but well-written novel, The Deepest Dark, Joan Hall Hovey tells the story of Abby Miller, a bestselling author, who recently suffered the loss of her husband, Corey and her 10-year-old daughter, Ellie in an automobile accident. So devastated by the loss, she suffers depression and even contemplates suicide. Although she has a deadline for another book, Abby has been unable to write, and finally decides to go to her cabin at Loon Lake, where she has fond memories of them spending time together. Abby is very close to her sister, Karen, and shares most things with her. However, she has never told Karen where the cabin is, and doesn't let Karen know where she is staying, which causes Karen to worry. Unfortunately, three men have escaped from the prison nearby, and one of them knows the cabin and goes there. He kidnaps Abby, and puts her life in danger. The escapees have already murdered an elderly couple, and Abby knows that if she doesn't do exactly what they want, she will also die.

The suspense throughout this novel is palpable; it is difficult to put down, because Hovey does an excellent job of portraying the characters so that they seem real. As the story progresses, the suspense builds slowly, and readers will most likely feel the terror of Abby and those who care about her.

The ending takes a surprisingly unexpected turn, and makes the novel well-worth reading. The novel is a little short, but all of the elements of a good novel are there, so suspense/thriller aficionados will enjoy this book on a quick trip or a rainy day. Hopefully there is more to come from Joan Hall Hovey; her writing style combined with a good imagination and outstanding storytelling skills make for a very good read.
