The final installment of Deborah Harkness' bestselling trilogy, The Book of Life continues with Diana's and Matthew's quest for the missing pages of Ashmole 782. Many of the characters from the previous books are reintroduced, as well as the enemies, and the suspense is palpable throughout. Although Emily technically died of a heart attack, it is widely thought that she was murdered, and Sarah, Emily's partner and Diana's aunt, is having a hard time coping. Benjamin, Matthew's evil son comes back after many years, and commits murders and creates more problems for Diana and Matthew. Matthew brings scientists into his lab to help him find the key to his blood rage. Diana is also pregnant with their twins, and Matthew must protect her. Whew!

This book, like the two previous in the series, is well written, believable, and absolutely fascinating, with suspense and danger at every turn. The ending, of course is unexpected, and it leaves readers wanting more. The main problem with this book, in fact, is that it is the end of the series, and readers will be disappointed that there are no more books to look forward to.

As with the two previous novels in the series, A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night, this book is impossible to put down. Although it is considered a fantasy thriller, the story and writing are so good that it seems that the happenings in the novel are real, and that the supernatural scenarios are everyday occurrences. The Book of Life is undeniably one of the best books of 2014, and the three books in the series are timeless and worth reading over and over. Harkness has outdone herself with this excellent book.

This book was purchased with personal funds and no promotion of the book was solicited by the author or publisher.
