Alex Cross is back in one of the best novels in the bestselling series in years. Alex Cross fans who not only love Alex, but also his whole family, will be on the edge of their seats; not only is Alex targeted by an unscrupulous murderer, Marcus Sunday, (who is convinced he is a genius and wants to make Alex Cross suffer), but also Bree, Nana Mama, and the kids. Two other unrelated sub-plots, a search for answers about the Cross' foster child, Ava's, death (which occurred in a previous novel), and a madman who is shooting some of the employees in massage parlors, kidnapping others, and also kidnapping and killing babies, keep readers on their toes.

Like most of Patterson's novels, Cross My Heart is a fast read; this one is easy to follow, and very difficult to put down. One of the negatives in this and several of James Patterson's Alex Cross novels is that human lives seem to be insignificant; there is simply too much killing – not just one dead body, but dozens. Sure, it makes the bad guys look really bad, but it seems a bit farfetched, even for fiction; too many violent killings seem like overkill. Patterson's bad guys are worse than ever, and it's hard to imagine that real human beings could be so bad. Nevertheless, those of us who are fans patiently wait for each installment in the life of one of our favorite heroes, Alex Cross, and each subsequent novel is a must read. Cross My Heart is definitely a must read, and since it is better than most, is definitely recommended.
