The days are growing shorter, the temperatures cooling down and leaves are turning a myriad of colors. Jack-o-lanterns and other Halloween decorations are beginning to appear.
The time has come to snuggle underneath a warm, cozy blanket and read tales that send chills down our spine. There are many authors that write books perfect for reading at this time of year - Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker are a few of them.
Icebound by Dean Koontz is a book that will send chills up your spine in more ways than one. Its setting, the Arctic, is extremely cold and reading about the intense coldness tends to make one shiver, even if it is hot outside.
Icebound opens with clips from unnamed newspapers. In the last clip, we learn that a team of scientists from a UN funded Station will travel to the Arctic and set off a series of explosions to separate an iceberg from the edge of the winter icecap, which is approximately 350 miles away from Greenland’s northeast coast. Doesn’t sound that exciting or scary, but don’t be deceived.
Among the group of scientists, there is a killer. A killer who is ruthless. The sights of this murderer are set on just one individual, but this killer is unconcerned if anyone else happens to be killed in the process. Just the thought of being stranded in the Arctic is scary enough. But the members of the expedition are also faced with freezing to death or being killed while trying to figure out which one of their group is a maniacal killer. Of course, when someone is murdered that immediately eliminates that individual from the list of suspects.
This tale which began so calm it was almost boring takes a decided turn to being full of nail-biting suspense. You become so concerned with what happens to members of the expedition, so caught up in trying to figure out which one of them is the killer, that you will most likely have bitten your nails to the quick by the time the story ends.
I really do not want to give away any more of the story. If you are a fan of suspense, this is a book that will be read time and time again.
